Our Story
Our journey began in 1994 when James Turtle discovered an absorbent cotton doormat that provided the ultimate protection for floors against dirt, dust and moisture. James was so impressed with the product that he put his name to it and The Turtle Mat Company was born. Find out in this demo video why James was so impressed.

1994
Turtle Mats first found their place in the muddy fields of county fairs across the country. James was often there in person, showing visitors how well they trapped dirt and helped keep homes clean. Those early days, meeting people face to face and sharing a simple, practical solution, set the tone for everything that followed. It’s a reminder of where we began, and the care that still guides us today.

2000
Back in December 2000, as broadband was just beginning to take hold, we launched the Turtle Mat website. It marked the start of our journey online—here’s a look at where it all began.

2004
In 2004, we published our very first catalogue, a carefully crafted collection showcasing our designs, new products, and helpful tips on caring for your doormat. It was more than just a catalogue; it was a way to share our passion and connect with everyone who values quality and thoughtful design. Thanks to your ongoing support, we’ve continued this tradition every year since. Over time, our collection has grown to include more than 100 unique designs, each made with the same care and attention that began it all.

2009
We launched our best-selling Cape Cod outdoor doormat range in 2009 with three colours - Coffee, Evergreen and Black and they were an immediate success. Made in the US these robust scraper mats are the perfect complement to Turtle Mats and are now available in doormat and runner sizes.

2016
We launched our hugely popular collaborations were with two much-loved British design houses —Morris & Co. and Scion Living. Brought together by a shared respect for pattern, colour and quality, these partnerships have grown steadily over the past eight years. From the intricate detail of William Morris' motifs to bold, contemporary prints, the collections have brought a distinctive design perspective to our range—timeless, characterful and thoughtfully designed.

2023
We introduced two new sizes to our best-selling runner collection, offering even more flexibility for busy hallways, kitchens and utility spaces. The new narrow runner (60x180cm) is ideal for tighter spots, while the large runner (75x200cm) provides extra coverage where you need it most. Both are available in some of our most-loved designs, including Paws Grey, Olive by Dee Hardwicke and both Rosehip colourways by Morris & Co.

Today
We've built a range of successful in-house "Turtle Collection" designs and are working with some of the brightest and best in design such as Morris & Co., Scion Living and Dee Hardwicke. We are very proud to have had your support for the last 30 years, so thank you from all of us here at Turtle Mat.
